comparing Motion Capture to Key Frame Animation

MOCAP is a technology for digitally recording specific moments (behavior patterns) of a person (actor) and then translating to animation so it's like actor's digital representation. A method that can be utilized to produce 3D animations is motion capture. In a motion capture studio, you record a writer and use sensors or cameras to catch all of his actions. When it comes to creating 3D animations that are as accurate and realistic as possible, motion capture is a helpful tool. MOCAP is used to create realistic, naturalistic animation or Believable motion as it has Accuracy to real life moment. You receive mocap in the form of an .fbx file that just contains the skeleton and the data you just captured.

motion capture has the advantage of recording body movement instantly and thus save time in production. On the other hand, there are many things that might go wrong, thus it also takes time (we need to get it right). We occasionally have to reshoot anything. We must re-record the full motion if the tracker is lost. Every frame of movement is recorded by the MOCAP, so each frame must be fixed separately, which can take a very long period. Additionally, we must also clean, pop, and touch up the mocap.

HAND KEY ANIMATIONS involve animators' hand animating keyframes starting with a motionless, rigged character. For stylized animation with a CARTOONEY feel, key-frame animation is used. It doesn't look realistic due of the exaggerated poses and complicated movements used in cartoons, such as lip syncing and physical character interaction. For example, you can't use mocap for bouncing ball it has its own limitation Key frame animation is simple to do and can be done using programmed like Maya. While Mocap is more expensive and creates very distinctive motions that completely mimic real life.

There are many animators who take all that mocap data and further edit and stylize it, taking it to the limit and giving it the appeal, it lacks. For instance, when a character (Super Mario) jumps, mocap data can be included to create the appearance of accurate physics and a powerful visual impact so you can also combine two process to make more believable animation.
