Composite Photorealism

Photorealism in composites is the art of invisible VFX

The seamlessness of the compositing acts like a perfect magician’s trick, where we know that we are viewing an illusion, but are unable to locate the deception, A special effect works in the mind of the spectator when the various manipulations that allowed the creation of the shot become invisible, even imperceptible. The spectator must forget that what he sees on the screen is not authentic, that it was not fully shot in one take or even by a single camera. Composite image is made from different visual elements, and it has been one of the areas of special effects from the early days of cinema until today. From live action cinema to animation techniques, from Georges Méliès to BUF Company(hal-03595081). the use of CGI and ‘the seamless splicing together of fictional scenes and archival footage … blurring the boundary between actuality and fiction’,

It’s no secret: nowadays, almost all films and TV series utilize VFX (visual effects) Compositing in some shape or form as an essential storytelling tool. But what about more subtle forms of fakery—those types of VFX that are used to trick the untrained eye into believing what it’s seeing should be completely part of the scene?(Invisible effects: The essential craft of how not to draw attention, 2021)Taking The Crown as an example, from clean-up work, matte paintings and CGI—to bring this regal slice of history to life. Speaking of the work he and his team completed on the show, Ben Turner, VFX Supervisor, comments: “It's the sort of work that I love. It's invisible VFX work and I just love it when people say, I didn't know there was any CGI, composition in The Crown. And that just makes my day.”

It’s a newer tool that has helped with visible and invisible effects. Good compositing tools, plate stabilization, color correction, multiple choice of keyers and good grain tools [are important in achieving invisible effects]. “The digital realm of visual effects is basically the same as it was 25 years ago. We can do more with the resources that we have because the computers are faster and the algorithms are better. “The methods have generally stayed the same – highly detailed assets, photorealistic lighting and real-world references – but the tools have evolved to give us much better and faster results.”

In the past, invisible effects were associated with rig removals, set extensions and environmental clean-up. However, the advances in photorealism and drone photography have expanded the scope to include digital doubles and what used to be considered physically impossible shots.

A lot of our industry is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. It’s a steady march towards more realistic effects. Even with the same tools we can do more because we learned more about what we do. The toolmakers have also learned more. I lead our software team on lighting and rendering. Having those photorealistic and physically-based materials, cameras and lights make the visual effects better, and integrates them into the photographic elements so that they really become invisible”(Failes, 2020).

As the filmmaking evolves so, too have the tools like nuke with innovation in digital technology pushing the boundary of vfx compositing giving artistic freedom. The hope of most vfx compositing is to convince the audience that a camera crew was able to go out and film the footage creating photorealism in film like ford vs ferrari, john wick, titanic, avatar, blade runner are the example of magic trick that vfx compositing plays.
